Passo Tonale’s new “shack”

Passo Tonale, in Italy’s Trentino/Lombardia region, has opened a smart addition to its mountain huts this winter.
La Baracca (meaning ‘The Shack’) opened in December, earlier than originally planned.

It is situated at the bottom of the slopes, by the Carezze draglift and reached mainly from the nursery areas and Vittoria slopes.

But it’s hardly a ‘shack’ as we might think of the term: the modern, glass-fronted structure is built on two levels, with a wood interior. There is a self-service restaurant with fantastic panini on the ground floor and a table-service area on the upper level. Both offer a choice of traditional dishes (pastas, pizzas etc).

The table-service restaurant is also open in the evening.

There’s also a large sun terrace that overlooks the slopes, conveniently ski-in/ski-out.

Passo Tonale and its linked neighbour Ponte di Legno make a reliably snow-sure choice.

The resort offers 100km of sunny, broad and gentle slopes – plus a more challenging glacier area on the other side of the high pass, the Presena.
